How to draw Tails' Emotions

By NetRaptor

Drawing Tails is a bit different from the other Sonic characters. He is either more anime or less anime than the rest, depending on how you draw. Here are a few examples of facial expressions.

Here is normal happy Tails. He has three tufts of hair on his forehead (his forelock), and three on both cheeks. In the Sonic Adventure games, these cheek tufts are very pronounced. You can draw his forehead-hair in any spot you like, and some people draw it very long. Experiment and find the look you like best.

His mouth is always a small triangle.

Tails with hurt feelings. He has a smaller mouth than the other characters, and it turns into a little squiggle when he's sad. Give him a heavy curved eyebrow, and make him looking up and to the side. This makes his expression more poigant, something like a kicked puppy would look.
Sad Tails. This is a stronger expression than "hurt feelings". Bend his ears all the way down, so you can't see inside them. Make his cheeks and forelock droop, and half-closed eyes. His mouth is now a single curved line.
Sad Tails, head down. Sometimes this expression works quite well, too. The flat ears are even more pronounced when you draw them from above. You can't see his mouth, so his ears, eyes and fur have to convey the idea that the poor kid is feeling blue.
Triumphant laugh. Maybe he just won a boss battle. When he yells, his muzzle gets bigger so his open mouth will fit. One of the anime laws is that the louder a character is speaking/yelling, the larger their mouth is. Tails' mouth is still a triangle, no matter how big it is.
Tails looking up. As with Sonic and the others, when Tails looks up, his eyes and ears get smaller and his muzzle takes up most of his face. His forelock is very pronounced here, and you can only see one ear.
When you draw Tails in profile, keep in mind that he has a snout and a chin, unlike Sonic. Tails' nose is quite small, and close to his eyes. This keeps him "young" looking. If you lengthen his snout and give him a bigger nose, he looks older.
Embarrassed. Tails' eyes will be "sad" eyes, but he will have a twisty smile, and his ears aren't flattened. Give him some blush on his cheeks to give him an unmistakably embarrassed look.
Freaked out. I imagine he just looked up and saw a semi bearing down on him. All of Tails' fur stands on end--his ears, his cheek tufts and his forelock. When a character is scared, their pupils contract, until sometimes you can't see them at all. A small dot works just fine. Draw some "shock" lines coming off the top of his head to convey his fear.
This is more of a pose than an emotion. If Tails is lifting something (Sonic, for instance), he will rear back, shut his eyes and clench his teeth. Draw two or three curved lines to show that he has his eyes screwed shut, make his teeth jagged, and add a few sweatdrops to show that he's really pulling.
