Shiny Hair
Echidna

By NetRaptor

Echidna hair is even easier to shade than Generic Hair, because there's no texture involved.

Draw your echidna's hair. This hair is sort of based on Thunderhawk's, because all the Archie echidnas seem to have this kind of hair, in varying degrees. I'm the most familier with Thunderhawk's, though.

Flood-fill your drawing, and select all the hair-spikes. I'm only going to color the hair in this tutorial, so ignore the rest of the face.
Change your brush color to black. Change your brush opacity to 30%.

Brush across the top and bottom, leaving a light streak in the middle.

Brush across the shadows again to deepen them. The darkest shadow should be right next to the highlight. This is how you achieve the "metallic" look, with very high contrast between the highlight and the shadow.
Change your brush color to white, and brush across the highlight until it's as light as you want.
Optional step: Pick another color and brush it across the tips of the hair-spikes. I find yellow and purple make a fantastic contrasting pair, and you get a wonderful pink midtone. Try using yellow as the highlight, instead of white.

And that's all there is to it. Now go out and draw characters with Really Shiny Hair. The more colorful, the better.
